| ARTIST STATEMENT JOY BAER FRESCOES IN PUBLIC SPACES Inspired by the spiritual storytelling frescoes of Pompeii, Italy, where I teach fresco workskhops, I paint to convey the lost language of symbolism. I strive for "romanita" which is an Italian concept of time that is not measured by clocks or calendars, but through eternity. I paint to convey classical iconography. Following the historical frescoes found in cultures around the world, I create the fresco process on plaster, rocks, marble, cement, and cave walls. A fresco casein is created on treated canvas. "Fresco" is Italian for "fresh." I use the time-honored fresco process using fresh earth minerals and fresh water painted onto a natural porous surface. Carbonization is formed, which is a chemical bond that endures for centuries. I am passionate to create frescoes as a timeless form of communication. I am honored to have three frescoes on display in the White House, Washington D.C. and in museums and collections arround the world.
